Introduction

Further Information

Be part of a dynamic team of volunteers and local experts in restoring this pristine piece of African bush from farmland to Nature Reserve. Animal re-introduction and local education initiatives combined with making roads and removing fencing make this project an exciting and educational experience.

Location

The volunteer camp and project is based on the Tachila Nature Reserve approximately 8km south-west or thirty minutes drive from the town of Francistown in eastern Botswana.

Age limits

Applicants must be at least 18years old at time of departure to Africa. Maximum age depends on applicant's physical condition.

The Volunteer Project

class photo

We are sending volunteers to Tachila to assist in changing the area from bush farmland to Nature Reserve and educational centre for local children. Therefore, your help is valuable in removing old structures such as fencing and water troughs aswell as assisting in the building of new ones such as an animal bomas to act as an acclimatiser for re-introduced wildlife to the reserve.

Be part of the team responsible for the release and monitoring of wildlife in the area. These species include rhino, sable antelope and cheetahs. Expert guides will teach you the bush skills necessary to track these animals in the wild.

Additionally, as a volunteer, you will be able to contribute to the local community by building an educational classroom and wildlife orphanage for rescued animals.

This is a great opportunity for you to make a difference to this beautiful area and learn about the bush and the local people who populate it.

Volunteer Support

The Tachila Nature Reserve project is the brainchild of Dr. Graham McCulloch who is the director of the volunteer program. Graham can be approached with any worries or problems while in Botswana. Additionally there is a permanent project co-ordinator on hand at all times to assist you day to day.

Orientation

On arrival at Francistown airport you will be met by a project representative and taken to the volunteer camp – here you will be briefed on the project and have the chance to acclimatize to what will be a very different climate and culture than you will be used to!

Meals and accomodation

While staying at Tachila you will have three meals a day varying from local to European food which you will be expected to assist in preparing.

The volunteer house is situated at the southern end of the beautiful Tachila area. You will be in volunteer accommodation with your own bed, linen and communal bathrooms with an adjoining living area.

Free time

From time to time you may feel the need to relax and head out of the bush to the vibrant town of Francistown. This prevents the dreaded 'bush burn out' and is a good excuse to mix with other like minded conservationists and let your hair down in town! This can be arranged with your project co-ordinator. Otherwise, six days a week will be a good mix of work, education and rest.

Getting there

From Johannesburg International Airport you will need to book a ticket to Gabarone International Airport. Air Botswana is the only operator and can be found on the internet – there is also a UK office number available on the site. From Gabarone you need to transfer to Francistown regional airport.

From Francistown Airport you will be picked up and transferred to the volunteer camp!
