Introduction

Further Information

Be part of a Last Wilderness educational team and visit some of the wildest areas left in Southern Africa. Based around the world famous Okavango Delta and Victoria Falls you will discover and learn the hidden secrets of these lush waterworlds.

elephant

We include this program for highly adventurous volunteers as a two week introduction to Botswana, its endangered wildlife and cultures. We highly recommend this project to travellers in Africa before they move onto our rigorous and demanding projects around Botswana.

Location

You will be based between different bush camps in and around Northern Botswana and Victoria Falls, including the Okavango Delta, Victoria Falls and Tsodilo World Heritage Site, and Makgadikgadi Pans.

Age limits

Applicants must be at least 18 years old at time of departure to Africa. The maximum age for this program is 30.

The Volunteer Programme

Volunteers are taught about how the natural and cultural worlds of Botswana and Victoria Falls operate. We achieve this by visiting the northern, eastern and southern extremities of the Okavango Delta river system as well as Victoria Falls and the Makgadikgadi Pans. Varying eco-systems and cultures lie at all the places you will visit.

What you learn about wildlife, African tribes and the environment will be vital as you continue your journeys in Botswana.

boat

Learn to drive a safari car and boat, monitor animals such as Crocodiles, Hippos and Elephants and visit areas where Lions and Buffalo can be found!

Volunteer Support

While on the project any questions or issues that need addressing can be referred to Andrew Harkness. Andrew has lived in Botswana for four years and will be available while co-ordinating the program.

Orientation

On arrival at Maun international airport you will be met by Andrew and the adventure will begin – before departing for the bush you will be briefed and have the chance to acclimatize to what will be a very different climate and culture than you will be used to!

Meals and accomodation

Volunteer's accommodation is based in bush or fly camps, mobile camps that you will help erect and put down when moving from one point of interest to another.

Each volunteer will share a good sized tent with a colleague. Bathrooms are always close by and meals are served three times a day at designated times.

Free time

We value our free time in Botswana as a chance to reflect on what we have seen and learnt. Therefore, every day has a time-out period to do just that. As a volunteer you will also want to let your hair down when in Maun and we encourage volunteers to responsibly enjoy themselves. This serves as a highly effective way of team bonding.

Getting there

From Johannesburg International Airport you will need to book a ticket to Maun International Airport. Air Botswana is the only operator and can be found on the internet – there is also a UK office number available on the site. From Maun you will be picked up and begin the adventure!
